Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 1, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information Is This Site Down? (“we”, “us”, the “site”) collects when you use it, why we collect it, and the choices you have. We aim to collect as little as possible.
The short version
- To check a site, the domain you enter is sent to our server, which then contacts that site to see if it’s up.
- We don’t require an account and we don’t build a profile of the domains you check.
- We use Google Analytics only after you accept via the cookie banner.
- No analytics cookies are set unless you opt in. You can change your choice at any time.
- We don’t sell your data or use it to build advertising profiles.
Information we collect
Domains you check
Unlike a purely in-browser tool, an “is it down?” check has to run on a server. When you submit a domain, that domain is sent to our server, which makes an outbound request to the target site to determine whether it responds. We may briefly cache the result of a check to reduce load and avoid hammering the target site. We do not link the domains you check to your identity or build a history of your activity.
Server logs
Like most websites, our server may automatically record standard log data — such as your IP address, the requested URL, timestamp, referrer, and browser user-agent. We use this only to operate the service securely: diagnosing errors, preventing abuse, and rate-limiting. These logs are retained only as long as needed for those purposes and are not used to track you across other sites.
Problem reports
If you click “I’m having problems” on a result page, we record the domain and the time, plus a one-way salted hash of your IP address — never the IP itself. The hash is used only to prevent one person from inflating the report count and to curb abuse; it isn’t linked to your identity. These reports are aggregated into the “reported down” counts shown on the site and are deleted after a short period.
Analytics (only with your consent)
If you accept analytics in the cookie banner, we use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use the site — for example, which pages are popular and roughly where traffic comes from. This may set cookies and share information such as your IP address (which Google truncates/anonymizes), browser type, and pages viewed with Google, acting as our processor.
We use Google’s Consent Mode. Until you click “Accept”, analytics storage is set to denied and no analytics cookies are placed. If you click “Decline”, we do not enable analytics cookies.
Cookies and local storage
| Name | Purpose | Type |
|---|---|---|
consent | Remembers whether you accepted or declined analytics. | localStorage (first-party) |
_ga, _ga_* | Google Analytics — distinguishes visitors. Set only if you accept. | Cookie (Google) |
Your choices and rights
You can change your cookie choice at any time using the link in the footer. You can also clear cookies and local storage in your browser at any time.
Depending on where you live (for example, under the EU/UK GDPR or the CCPA/CPRA in California), you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal data, and to object to certain processing. Since we hold no account or contact information ourselves and only process analytics data through Google, the most direct way to exercise these rights is to decline analytics and clear your browser data. You can also review Google’s Privacy Policy and opt out via Google’s Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
Children
This site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we’ll revise the “Last updated” date above.
